Soooo we meet again Like-Hearted Ravers!!
I seem to get sudden urges to post in my blog but when I do, I like to make sure I express myself fully! No half-stepping here!! *Cheesy Grin on my Face*
Before I begin, I like to thank You, Yes, YOU for taking the time to read my posts, for following me on IG, on Twitter, and for being a supporter of the Edmpire Movement. As I type this post I am listening to Above and Beyond’s - Group Therapy Radio show and its filling my mind with nothing but blissful thoughts. Ahhhh, how I love this music...
In my last post, I spoke about a fellow-raver that I am hoping to meet some day and today I am going to tell you about another individual whom I’ve had the opportunity to meet…
Just like Jeremy (previous post), I had met DREW UTTERBACK over the web but instead of Instagram this time it was on Facebook.
I enjoy frequenting the social media giant Reddit, and do dabble a little on Facebook as well, both however from my personal account. Leading me to tell you that Facebook has a “Reddit EDC Group” in which Drew is an ‘admin', meaning he answers questions, delegates and helps out with monitoring the group and probably other stuff that I have no clue about!
Prior to EDC LV 2014 this year, a few friends of mine and I were planning a “Pre-EDC Warm-Up” party and found out that Hardwell, Dannic and Dyro were going on a North American Bus Tour and planning to have a show in Minneapolis… We bought tickets without delay and put our game faces on! We were ready to tear up the dance floor on arrival!
Before we left on our trip, I was on Facebook reading a post on the EDC Reddit group site and saw people sharing their own 'warm-up' plans… which obviously lead me to sharing mine :-P
After doing so, I saw that a random Redditer (Drew) wrote that he would see me there… and once again, OBVIOUSLY I messaged him to meet up at the venue to which he had no qualms with. I took his number and shortly after, my group of friends and I were on our way to Minneapolis and I was looking forward to rave with Drew.
Sorry for my anti-climactic twist but my phone had died prior to reaching the venue and I didn’t end up getting to meet him on the trip… bummer!
BUT I made SURE that I wouldn’t miss him the next time we we’re in the same area code…. Las Vegas for the almighty Electric Daisy Carnival!
We stayed in touch between those times and Finally met up at the “Reddit Meet-Up” held at the Quad on the strip. Before I continue, I have to take a second to take my hat off for the admins and organizers of the meet-up because it was absolutely Fantastic! Not only did many people get to spread great vibes, network with each other and represent their rave-families… We MARCHED up the Vegas strip together in unity and created quite a spectacle with chants, cheering and high-fives, the whole nine yards! Can’t wait to do it again next year! Through this meet up I got to also meet Grant Gilmore who gave me such a welcoming vibe and continues to this day. I can see why people can be magnetized to guys like Drew and Grant, they really made me feel at home.
So before I continue about my story with Drew, I thought I would ask him some questions just like I had with Jeremy to give you guys a sense of who he is…
Me: Hey Drew! So here we go! What is it that keeps you coming back? What is it that makes you connect to EDM compared to other things?
Drew: Hey Aman, hope things are well! Music is an integral part of my life, whether it's listening to trance or house while working or at a festival. I'm always out to discover new and exciting sounds. When video games RollerCoaster Tycoon and Unreal Tournament were the hot new games, one of my friends that I knew through the community forums introduced me to listening to trance on www.di.fm and I soon fell in love with trance, happy hardcore, hardstyle and other fast BPM (beats per minute) genres.
Me: Being a gamer that enjoys EDM is not a huge surprise now is it Drew? Tell us who you enjoy listening to and why them?
Drew: Armin Van Buuren & Tiesto got me hooked on listening to trance and Showtek made me fall in love with hardstyle. Now a days, you'll hear my playlists consist of Markus Schulz, Max Graham, TyDi, Simon Patterson, Darren Styles, Headhunterz, Dillon Francis, Tiesto, Eric Prydz and more. I'm excited for Fatboy Slim and Moby's re-emergence so I'll be keeping an eye on their new releases as I consider them some of the pioneers of the modern scene who helped get electronic music into the general public's ears.
Me: I like how you play homage to some of the greats! Tell us about the scene in places you have visited!
Drew: Minneapolis is beginning to expand quickly and is an opportunity for growth for artists and production companies. Shoutout to the crew at Sound In Motion who recently brought Hardwell to the local nightclub as the first stop of the Dyro, Dannic and Hardwell North American Bus tour and are about to hold their 3rd Summer Set Music Festival.
Me: Yeah, the three of them really threw it down! Drew, on a more personal note, is there anything that you don’t like about this scene? Anything you would like to see change?
Drew: The scene tries to divide itself into cliques or categories sometimes. I had even caught myself doing this before. I have found that keeping an open mind to discovering new music and going to smaller shows or stages has provided more fun than the headliners playing bangerz. I felt as though Carnage had the best hardstyle set at EDC 2014 because he played a lot of classics that I was listening to during 2003-2007. Seven Lions had one of the best overall sets and played something from almost every genre imaginable! When you give something in life a chance, you may just discover beauty.
Me: Very well said Drew… Can you share any moments that come to mind in your life that stand out?
Drew: In the fall of 2013, I was an exchange student in Monterey Bay, California and heard that Q-Dance (the largest hardstyle production company in the world) would be bringing their talented DJs and spectacular stage production to Los Angeles. After reading about a Reddit meet-up happening, I brought my friend Ross and we ended up meeting many cool people, including Grant Gilmore, who I consider very close friends now.
Me: This is how we are very much so alike Drew…we value people. Are there any other special events that stick out in your heart?
Drew: So many to choose from, but one of the most recent is the Markus Schulz pool party during EDC 2014 week. I was able to represent the Unofficial Reddit EDC group with our limited edition flags and was able to get it signed by the Unicorn Slayer himself. Afterwards, I had the enjoyment of seeing Aman's reaction as I gave him the signed flag because it meant much more to me to be selfless.
Me: I won’t ever forget you giving me that flag, you didn’t even have to show me a video just to prove it pal, I knew it was real, and its a moment I won’t ever forget… Schulz Army :) Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
Drew: Never turn down an opportunity to meet new people in life. They might just be your next best friend.
Me: Thank you dear friend for taking the time to share some of your insight and experience with us.
So, can you guys see how I can’t get enough of this scene?! I am surrounded by some really genuine people, why would I wanna be anywhere else? Drew had gotten to meet me only on this one trip and went out of his way to get me a signed Reddit Flag by Markus Schulz knowing how big of a fan I am! He never had to, but he did. Most people would of kept it for themselves, and I wouldn’t blame them but he didn’t. I can’t wait to visit Drew and Grant out in San Diego and get a real authentic California rave experience. I would of had loved to share Drew’s IG but he currently isn’t active on it. What I can recommend that you do is if you are attending EDC or any Insomniac (promotion organization) event for that matter, feel free to join the Reddit EDC group on Facebook because the admins on it are super helpful and devoted in helping out with questions and tips!
Can’t wait till the annual gathering (EDC) next year, but in the mean time… I do have a local event featuring Dzeko and Torres and the godfather Tiesto lined up for the weekend! Aaaand Eeeeep! Lets not forget…. **Trumpets Sound**… TOMORROWWORLD in less than two weeks!
I will be going to TomorrowWorld for the first time AND I'll be solo on this trip! Deep down I've always wanted to go to a festival alone and here is my chance… Funny thing is, you aren’t ever truly alone when you go to events like these but anyhow lets just say I am looking forward to taking it all in! I’ll keep you all posted on my next adventure ;)
Peace. Love. Unity. Respect.
