Simply put, 2015 - 2016 (right up till now) has been quite a significant time for the dance music scene in our city.
We have seen music acts flowing into our city more than we ever have in previous years and I hope you hear me loud and clear when I say: ITS ABOUT TIME!
I am giving you a sincere notice to go out and support our venues that have risen to the challenge of bringing DJ acts to our city!
Im giving the nod, better yet a salute to Green room, District Stop, Nectar, Union, Reign, 441 Main for welcoming acts such as Nora En Pure, Jauz, Tiger Lily, BTSM, EDX, Ghastly, Adventure Club, Vanic and a list of names than I can’t even entirely recall!
Let's not forget the Assiniboine Downs and growth of Summer of Sound with the most stacked team of headliners that had ever played for SOS! The turn out was larger than before and I can only expect that it will grow larger once people like us bring more friends out to share these experiences with us! I truly feel that this is the annual event in our city that really shows us how much our local scene is growing every year as I have been happy to have attended since its start.
Full Flex Express sent chills down our spines with that PK Sound and diverse line up as well! Great to have that tour come roll around every few years as it was just as fun as the first one, if not more! The energy that Jack U commanded was at the highest level and I met so many new people at this event! Meeting new people is always half the fun! :)
Though the rain washed us down at Lost & Found Music and Arts Festival, those who toughed it out found a common bond of being able to weather the storm and bringing the party to the AMAZING stage no matter the elements we faced. As much as it was grey outside, this was definitely one of my most memorable experiences this summer. From the Dj’s to the attendees we all pooled in our positive energy and really rocked it!
We have up and coming producers in our city that are grinding to break through the seams of the music industry such as Lampa and Fahjah, our good friend Skene Music and newcomers Van Holtslag.
(Apologies for any other up and coming producers who I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting)
The closing of Underground Revival has been one that has stumped some of our city’s enthusiasts but the opening of a new venue by the same organization will be one to definitely make up for the pause! I loved getting my kick of psy-trance at UR. Events at Pyramid, The Garrick Hotel and Planit Lounge have been keeping us warm on nights for more underground tastes.
Moving into festival season 2016 I just wanted to add that Canada is still fairly behind compared to the US when it comes to dance music amongst the masses. I didn’t feel that the crowd was more ‘sophisticated’ in Toronto nor Alberta at large events than what we have here in Winnipeg. Most of the large-scale dance music festivals are still relatively new in our country. Though the production at festivals such as Veld and Digital Dreams is much more grand than what we have in Winnipeg I still must admit that we really do have something special here at home. I am seeing more faces that I had never seen before entering this scene and coming out to all the events with an unlimited supply of fresh enthusiasm. The production at events is just getting better as well. I am definitely one to be fully enjoying the momentum in this city for dance music events. Lets not forget that the exchange rate is killing us and these acts do not drop their prices for shows in Canada yet our local organizers are still taking the chance in bringing them to our city!
In the upcoming months we already have names like the beautiful Whipped Cream, gritty Snails, dub-step king Zomboy, hit-men Dzeko & Torres, and AC SLATER! I wouldn’t of imagined such a stream of talent coming into our city so on that note, I am telling you all to not only go and support these venues, but show up for local opening acts and thank our promotors because without them we honestly wouldn’t be blessed with these events. I truly feel like we need to tip our hat off to the locals here making this happen for all of us, no matter which sub-genre we like.
Support the music by sharing local artist’s Soundcloud and give them feed back! Our local producers can one day start to take flight and you will be always credited to being the individuals who helped them through their most pivotal time. I have attached at the bottom the SoundCloud’s of some of the local producers I support. If you like what you hear, subscribe!
Winnipeg, you truly have some momentum… Lets keep the rave going!
Peace, love, unity, respect
